History of bird sanctuary –

Early in the 20th century,  as awareness of the need to  conserve wildlife & natural ecosystems grew, India began to establish  various bird sanctuaries from 1950s –1980s: To save migrating birds and their  habitats, several  bird  sanctuaries  were  established throughout India. Since wetlands, lakes, and coastal regions are essential for bird migration, many of these sanctuaries were situated there.

1. Rajasthan’s Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary) is well-known for its winter migration of Siberian cranes and other migratory birds.

2. Haryana’s Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary renowned for a wide range of migrating bird species, particularly during the winter months.

3. Andhra Pradesh’s Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary renowned for housing big migrating bird populations, especially ducks.

4. Uttarakhand’s Asan Barrage Bird Sanctuary a well-liked location for birdwatching, especially during the winter months when migratory species visit.

5. Rajasthan’s Sariska Tiger Reserve, which doubles as a bird sanctuary In addition to tigers, it has a diverse range of birds, such as hornbills and Indian eagle-owls.

6. In Assam, Manas National Park and Bird Sanctuary Numerous endangered bird species can be found at this UNESCO World Heritage site.

7. Assam’s Dibru-Saikhowa National Park renowned for a variety of bird species, including the endangered and rare white-winged wood duck.

8. Karnataka’s Tungabhadra River Bird Sanctuary It is situated alongside the Tungabhadra River and is a popular destination for migratory birds.

9. Karnataka’s Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary The painted stork is one of the many bird species that call the banks of the Kaveri River home.

10. Odisha’s Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary renowned for housing endangered of the Irrawaddy dolphins and serving as a refuge for migratory birds.

14. Punjab’s Harike Wetland and Bird Sanctuary renowned for having an abundance of birds, particularly during the migration season.

15. Tamil Nadu’s Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary Numerous migratory birds can be found at one of the oldest bird sanctuaries.
