During the reign of Akbar, one of the greatest Mughal Emperors, Agra Fort was constructed from 1565 – 1573. The fort was completed after eight years of suffering and more than 40,000 workers. Akbar constructed the fort to serve as the Mughals’ principal palace because he understood the importance of the site. Up until 1638, the fort served as the primary palace of the Mughal dynasty’s emperors. The Jahangir Mahal, Khas Mahal, Diwan-i-Khass, Diwan-i-Am, Machchhi Bhawan, and Moti Masjid are just a few of the fort’s many remarkable buildings. The Agra Fort lost its position as the primary palace of the Mughal emperors when Delhi replaced Agra as the capital of the Mughal dynasty in 1638. The rich history of Agra Fort is well-known.
The fort’s appearance has changed over the years due to its ownership by numerous emperors and rulers. It all started in 1526 when Babur and Ibrahim Lodi of the Lodi dynasty engaged in the first battle of Panipat. Babur took up residence in Ibrahim Lodi’s palace and fort after defeating him. He then constructed a massive step well (baoli) inside the fort, altering it. The fort quickly rose to prominence as a Mughal monument. In actuality, the crowning of Humayun, Babur’s successor, was held at the fort in 1530.
Emperors from other dynasties soon began to show interest in the fort, and attempts to win them over begun. Sher Shah Suri of the Sur Empire fought Humayun in 1540 and won the battle of Bilgram. Humayun gave the fort to Sher Shah Suri, who made a few modest alterations to fit his own architectural preferences. For the following fifteen years, the fort was occupied by the Sur dynasty’s rulers. Humayun was successful in retaking Agra and the fort in 1555. However, Agra was taken by Hemu Vikramaditya, the general and military leader of Adil Shah Suri – The last Sur dynasty monarch, a year later. He followed the escaping army to Delhi, where he participated in the Battle of Tughlaqabad ensued between him and Tardi Beg Khan, the military commander of the Mughals.
The fight was decisively lost by Tardi Beg Khan, and Hemu Vikramaditya crowned himself king. However, just one month into Hemu’s reign, on November 5, 1556, Akbar and his army marched into Delhi and routed Hemu’s army. The Mughals once again controlled the fort, although it was rapidly falling apart. It was constructed entirely of bricks and was known as Badalgarh at the time. Akbar chose to restore it using red sandstone after realizing its historical and contextual significance. The fort underwent significant alterations and assumed its present shape during the rule of Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan reconstructed the fort according to his own architectural preferences after demolishing several of its structures. The Maratha Empire took control of the fort around the beginning of the 17th century.
The fort had numerous owners during this time, including a number of Maratha emperors and their adversaries, including numerous Mughal emperors. Ahmad Shah Durrani, the founder of the Durrani Empire, decisively defeated the Marathas in 1761. The fort was occupied by Durrani dynasty monarchs until 1785. Under Mahadji Shinde’s rule, the Marathas reclaimed the fort in 1785.
